Upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04

By scott, May 12, 2010 2:19 pm

After preparing all my back ups I decided to complete a base install of Ubuntu 10.04 from 9.10. The reason for the base install was so that I would have a nice clean install on a LTS release and also I wanted to move to Ext 4 file system as doing the normal upgrade I would have been still using Ext 3 file system.

The actual install took only around 15 to 20 mins to complete, which was for the me the fastest install I have done to date. I then installed all the updates and then started with installing the adobe flash plugins, and other plugins for media that are not installed. That I think is one of the weak points for Ubuntu, is that not everything works out of the box. This is OK for me and many other people, but for your general desktop user it is or could be a bit of a let down. A part from that it’s just a matter of installing all the programmes I need and re install my back up data that is required!!

For a guide on a base install & ultimate set-up please see below for information from the world famous site of Tombott.

Upgrade to Ubuntu 9.04

By scott, April 29, 2009 10:39 am

Upgrade my system from ubuntu 8.10 to 9.04 via the software update function. It all seemed to work fine, but took about hour plus to complete which is more down to my system (self build machine, done about 5 years or more ago) than ubuntu I would say.

My first impressions is that it appears just like 8.10 apart from the notifications which are a nice touch, but the really work as always is under the bonnet with new updates to gnome 2.26, the Linux kernel 2.6.28, X.org server 1.6, Ext4 filesystem support and more. It runs well on my lame system and seems a lot smoother than 8.10, so top marks so far.

Now to the problem that has occurred since the update.

  • Unable to read my creative zen mp3 player – Gnomad freezes
  • Cannot mount IPOD player – Do not permissions to read
  • Reading DVD from drive – Read only permissions, do not have permissions to read

I have checked all the permissions for the user, tried using mount -t iso9660 -r /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom but no joy. So in short I have some kind of permissions issue here, I’ll need to do some more digging around to resolve the problem.

Any ideas on how to fix this, then please leave a comment.

Ubuntu 8.10 – Intrepid Ibex

I have now upgraded to ubuntu 8.10 the other day, the install went with out any problems. The only issue that I have is with my GPU which is a GeForce4 MX 420 and that required me to activate the nVidia proprietary driver version 96. This will enable the 3D acceleration to work.

I’m not going to do a review as this will have been done by many others and with a lot more in depth analysis. But my overall impression is good with some nice extras. I do like the tab’s in nautilus 2.24.1. It’s not amazing but worth the upgrade or install.
